The Soil Pollutants

چکیده
We consider as a pollutant any chemical of natural or anthropogenic origin which accumulates in the soil medium and changes the natural soil equilibrium, as a result of human activity. A modern society, however, cannot be developed without the use of natural and synthetic compounds which may be added to the various ecosystems. The art of safeguarding the environment consists of minimizing the amount of out-system compounds reaching the land surface and restraining as much as possible the pollution-generating sites by controlling their disposal habits. This chapter will deal with the pollutants reaching the land surface, with emphasis on their chemical structure and properties, which in the final state control their behavior in the soil. For didactic reasons, we have grouped the soil pollutants into inorganic, inorganic-organically bound compounds, and organic toxic compounds. This chapter will not include tabular data of the properties of the soil pollutants, but only a blend of illustrative characteristics of the major pollutants reaching the soil porous media.

Identifying sources of soil inorganic pollutants on a regional scale using a multivariate statistical approach: role of pollutant migration and soil physicochemical properties.
Principal components analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis were used to estimate the contribution of four components related to pollutant sources on the total variation in concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, As, Se, Hg, Fe and Mn in surface soil samples from a valley in east China with numerous copper and zinc smelters. Results indicate that when carrying out source identification of inorganic ...
متن کاملSorption of PAHs in the Soil Environment with Emphasis on the Role of Soil Organic Matter: A Review
Recently sorption of organic pollutants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), has received much attention and researchers agree that organic matter (the amount of organic matter and its nature) is the most important factor affecting the sorption, desorption and fate of organic pollutants in soil and sediments. It is well documented that organic matter of soil and sediments is ...
متن کاملSoil features in rookeries of Antarctic penguins reveal sea to land biotransport of chemical pollutants
The main soil physical-chemical features, the concentrations of a set of pollutants, and the soil microbiota linked to penguin rookeries have been studied in 10 selected sites located at the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula (Maritime Antarctica). This study aims to test the hypothesis that biotransport by penguins increases the concentration of pollutants, especially heavy met...
متن کاملA Review on Impact of E-waste on Soil Microbial Community and Ecosystem Function
The ever increasing pile-up of electronic waste in dumping sites, especially in developing countries such as China, Pakistan, India and several African countries, might have caused a significant alteration in the microbial community of the contaminated sites. This change in the microbial population may have significant impact to the soil ecology function. The major pollutants of electronic wast...
متن کاملRemoval of organic contaminants in bioretention medium amended with activated carbon from sewage sludge
Bioretention, also known as rain garden, allows stormwater to soak into the ground through a soil-based medium, leading to removal of particulate and dissolved pollutants and reduced peak flows. Although soil organic matter (SOM) is efficient at sorbing many pollutants, amending the bioretention medium with highly effective adsorbents has been proposed to optimize pollutant removal and extend b...
